Watch your high-lights!

Digital photography is NOT very forgiving if you don't get the exposure very close in the camera. For images like this one, where the highlights of the white painted wood and the white flowers still need to have detail, you need to do one or all of several "tricks" to check the exposure while you are shooting.

Look at your camera's histogram carefully, making sure you don't have a strong and wide "spike" going up the right side of the histogram; watch for "blinkies" if you have the over-exposure warning set for viewing on your camera's LCD screen; or do those, and still take a series of pictures at different exposures, and choose the best one when back at the computer as I did here!
