Photographing Models
Friday, August 6th 2010 @ 9:09 AM
Photographing models is very different from traditional portrait photography. The lighting and the posing needs to be MUCH edgier. Hanna is a vocal performance major who would like to earn extra college money by modeling. This session was a chance for her to learn about model posing.
For this image, I used a long, narrow softbox as the main light, a very low-level fill light, and a hair light. I would guess I was at a 4:1 lighting ratio, though I have to admit that I go by 'look' rather than strict metering.

For the image below, I used a large octagonal soft box, two background lights, and a fill light to saturate the image with light while still maintaining shadow interest.

The final image used the most 'traditional' portrait lighting style. It's interesting to note that this is the image that has gotten the most attention on Facebook. People love her doe-like eyes and the pose. OK, and ALL the women love her boots! Nordstrom, pay attention - Hanna makes women want to buy your merchandise!

This was a great start, and we'll be having more sessions in the future! Click here to see a larger selection of her images.
