Veronica, myself, Lars (only 11 years old and past 5'10"!), and then on the couch, Miriam and Anita. |
Anita doing her first baking ever, chocolate chip cookies of course! |
Ready to pop another tray in for baking ... and they were awesome to eat! She's also baked Ginger Crinkles and other things now. We LOVE teaching her to cook our favorite treats! |
This was taken seconds after Anita touched snow for the first time. Taiwan is along the Tropic of Cancer, meaning it is ... tropical! ... in climate. It was a nicely warm day (in the 40's F.) but there was plenty of snow. This is at the snow-park for sledding across from Hoodoo Ski Bowl at the summit of the Santiam Pass. |
Anita takes her first snow-ball hit! With a loud giggle, I must note! |
SPLAT! Our fast-learning young lady scores a direct hit on Lars with the first snow-ball she ever threw! |
In line, from top to bottom as we trudge up for the first sledding run, is myself, Lars, and Anita ... |
Still trudging up the hill ... but Anita wanted to wait and watch, so I went down with Lars. |
Now that she's seen Lars and I, when Miriam went up with a sled she was willing to get on, but only BEHIND Miriam! |
Well, they made it most of the way down the hill at least ... before over-turning sideways. Miriam seems not to be the best plastic-sled-driver! |
Another run, and for a big change, they made it ALL the way down without over-turning. |
After we sledded, we went across the highway to Hoodoo Ski Bowl, a nice moderate-sized skiing area at the top of the Santiam Pass on Hwy 22, about 80 miles south-east of Salem. Anita had of course never seen ski-lifts and skiing LIVE like this ... there were still a few people skiing and snow-boarding and she found it amazing to watch them come down the steep hills and glide right on by us, normally even under control! |
We did see a couple wipe-outs, of course ... and she was amazed that they just got right back up and skiied off, after tracking down errant skis of course! |
We drove a couple miles to the east of the summit of the pass to give Anita this view of Mt. Washington, one of the oldest volcanoes in the cascade range, and one of the few that are officially considered extinct. When she found that ALL of the mountains and hills we had crossed or could see were volcanoes, several quite active, she was amazed. Welcome to Oregon, Anita! |
